What to Put on a Pet Memorial Keepsake

Engraving is unforgiving: there's no editing it later. Here's what fits, what reads well at small sizes, and the lines people return to.

Engraved memorial keepsake with a pet's name

The basics that always work

Name. Dates. That's a complete memorial, and it ages well.

Short lines people choose

Four to six words is the sweet spot for jewelry and ornaments.

  • Forever loved.
  • Always in our hearts.
  • Until we meet again.
  • Loved beyond words.
  • My good boy. / My good girl.
  • Best friend, always.

How much text fits

On a pendant of roughly one inch, plan for a name plus one short line, or a name plus dates. On an ornament you can comfortably add a third line. On a framed print you have room for a longer message, but restraint still reads better.

Formatting dates

Years alone (2011 – 2024) age better than full dates and are easier to read at engraving sizes. Use an en dash with spaces.
